My Love Affair With Tortillas

When I first arrived in Mexico, I didn’t get tortillas. It’s not that I wasn’t served tortillas; they were presented to me at every meal. It’s that I didn’t grasp the concept of why eating tortillas was a good thing to do! Especially when there was so much delicious bread in the world! So I would just pick up a fork, and leave my tortillas by the wayside, untouched. Who wants to eat floppy wet napkins? Slowly I realized the subtle delicious genius of tortillas. And I have since come to love them! It’s fair to say you have not eaten really tasty tortillas, until you have had some that where handmade by Abuelas (Grandmas) with love! Cooked and heated on an open fire, heaven. First of all corn tortillas are much better than wheat, and they absolutely must be heated on an open fire. You can place them directly on hot coals, just give them a whack to knock off the excess ash, and get ready for a delicious taste sensation. Since I’ve been eating them, my digestion has really improved. Now I savor my tortillas and I never use forks and knives!!! Tortillas are economical, you can stretch out your meal with them. They are organic, with just 3 ingredients; masa flour, water and salt. They cut down on dish washing as you don’t need utensils if you eat your food with tortillas!! But most of all, they are warm chewy and delicious! Like dressing your food up in a tasty little coat! Buen provecho! Love, Jennifer...

A Sparkly New Monday Morning

Ah it’s Monday Morning and I feel so fresh!!! What can give you a fresher start, than a sparkly new Monday morning!? Well how about the monday morning after Easter, the day to celebrate the Resurrection of the Christ?!!! Now THAT’s an immaculate new beginning !!! So today is the first day of my brand new life… Here in the jungle, of the Caribbean coast of Mexico, I awoke to some fresh early morning sun showers, a blessing for my orchids and fruit trees!! Today the upstairs (bedroom) level of my casa will be complete. The new wood floor is varnished and so gorgeous, i want to keep this floor as free of clutter as possible! We will move my new queen mattress upstairs, and hang my mosquito netting. We will add the jungle branch clothes rack and I will finally unpack my suitcases, after 6 months!! I will take my first ever bath in my brand new Claw-foot bathtub! (and cut my toenails which look a bit like the Orange monster from Bugs Bunny cartoons!!) Today we will move out the clutter of boxes and bags, covered in cement dust and cobwebs, and unpack all the kitchen things once and for all!! This will free up the “living room space” in the center of house, to make room for the new french doors, which will open onto the new stone patio!! (Once it is made!!) The French doors will go where this window is currently. Today we will right the wrongs of last week (i.e., re-install the backwards Garden Patio door facing in!!) and move forward into the...

Manifestation With Clarity

I believe in manifestation with clarity. That is if you can get very clear about what you want, you can bring it about. Here is an example… So I am down here in Mexico, and I found a little house right in the middle of a Cenote Park, surrounded by jungle. I am 2 klms from the beach!! and 15 klm from the town. It is necessary for the first time in my life to buy a car. Up till now living in NYC, a car was a luxury that I never afforded myself, it simply was not necessary. But here it’s a different story. I live on a bumpy dirt road through the tropical woods. My friend said he would help me get a good car, that we could go to nearest city, Merida, where they had a huge car sale every weekend with hundreds of cars, maybe even thousands, we could bring a mechanic and check all the papers and numbers to make sure the cars were legal. I was really thankful for the help because to me this whole process sounded like a hassle and a nightmare. I was really dreading doing this. It’s a 4 hour bus ride to Merida. And I don’t know the first thing about cars! So when my friend asked me, “What type of car do you want?” I said, “A gold one!” Not ostentatious gold, but subtle, like platinum! And I don’t want black interior because with the sun down here, black interiors become like ovens! I would like white, no that gets too dirty, off white like beige, like...

It’s Amazing How Life Can Change

When I came to visit Tulum, in Aug 2014, I fell in love with this place. This is the gorgeous Mayan Riviera Mexico, the Caribbean coast of the Southern Yucatan. I dare say, I had decided even before I got here, that this was the scene of the next phase of my life adventure! I love living life as an adventure, that is who I am. I have never craved security. I thrive on new experiences and challenging myself. I just like taking chances, not playing it safe. I feel, I have nothing to lose, as long as I enjoy the process. It must be said that uprooting my life as a Footwear Designer in NYC and moving to Mexico was not an easy enterprise. But typing this while surrounded by tropical bird songs in the early morning makes it all worthwhile. The house I am building here in the gorgeous Mayan Riviera Mexico (where the jungle meets the beach!) is really coming along, as I see my dream take shape, it is a thrill beyond satisfaction. Today my crew of Mayan artisans are finishing off the upstairs bathroom, I designed it to be my own personal jungle spa, complete with a claw footed tub and a swarm of butterflies swirling across the tiled walls. People ask me how could I give up the beautiful prewar apt that I loved so dearly back in NY, it was touch melancholy letting go of that life. But I felt compelled to let it all go, to start anew. And so here I am, it is not better or worse, it is...
